Purchase and Sale Agreement

The Forest Trust for the Children of Cortes Island Society (FTCCIS/Children’s Forest Trust) has some wonderful news to share.

We have signed an historic sale and purchase agreement with Mosaic Forest Management (Mosaic) as an initial step towards the purchase of the Children’s Forest , 261 acres of Mosaic’s private lands fronting on Carrington Lagoon. FTCCIS considers these lands to be the heartland jewels of the Cortes wilds. The Children’s Forest contains towering Douglas-fir, majestic red cedar and the island’s oldest Sitka Spruce, grandmother guardians of the salmon and the Children’s Forest. The area contains sensitive ecosystems and multiple rare species and FTCCIS has documented the regional, provincial and global significance of the Children’s Forest.

The vision of the Children’s Forest has been spearheaded by the youth on Cortes Island, BC, who have developed leadership and stewardship skills and engaged in place-based learning of the wild in this remarkable story. The Children’s Forest Trust has supported the youth and provided the legal, formal framework for realising this vision, while working with Mosaic to bring the dream of purchasing these lands much closer to reality.

We have more work to do to seize this opportunity. We are in advanced planning for a community fundraising programme this summer. As this unfolds, we will be communicating more details to everyone over the summer.

This is the moment for YOU, the Cortes community (near and far) and those interested in these lands, to help support this land acquisition from Mosaic.

Imagine…..a forest In trust to Children!!
